It's Race Time: Meet the Coordinator

May 13, 2019 - Lauren Leaman
Hey runners,

My name is Lauren Leaman, I am a native of Parkersburg West Virginia and I am this years News and Sentinel Half Marathon Coordinator. I graduated from Parkersburg High school in 2016 where I was a member of the soccer and track and field teams. After high school I made my way to Buckhannon, West Virginia where I decided to continue my education and athletic career at West Virginia Wesleyan College. I am a member of the Women's Track and Field team and am currently pursuing a bachelors degree in business administration with a marketing minor and have just recently begun to work on my masters degree in business administration along with it. I am really excited to have received the opportunity to work with such a large event and for the experience and skills that are going to come along with it.

I began my track career at Emerson Elementary school, where I swore I was never going to run again. As much as I hated it I continued to compete, because there was just something about it that I couldn't let go of. I began competing in the junior races where my best friend and I would compete for first and second in the 400m dash. As I got older I began to run the 2-mile every year with my dad and still didn't understand why I was doing this sport. For years, I always wanted to go away to college to play soccer but ended up running track and I am glad I did. Even though it was not my primary sport, through it I have grown, made memories, and met so many amazing people; where I have the News and Sentinel Junior and 2-miles Races to thank.

Growing up with an athletic trainer as a father who is very passionate about our communities athletes succeeding I have been around a lot of athletic events; the half marathon being the most memorable. He created the Cool Zone, in which I was always a part of setting up and passing out popsicles as the runners would pass us by. This summer is going to be different for me because I get to look from the inside out. I get the opportunity to work with each of you and help organize such an amazing community event.

So if your reading this, it probably means that you are considering entering one of our races, and I really recommend you do. Encourage your family and friends to join the race with you and begin to create some amazing memories like I have. Who knows maybe it will turn into a family tradition for you. Registration is open and you can secure your spot in one of the races at:
