PARKERSBURG - St. Marys' Jenny Brewer made her return to the News and Sentinel Half Marathon women's Two Mile Race after a 10-year absence a victorious one in record time Saturday.

Brewer, 20, a St. Marys High School grad, was timed in 11:49.5 to easily outdistance both her top two challengers, as Desirae Schoonover, 13, from West Union was second in 13:07.6 and Allison Currey, 16, of Parkersburg came in third at 13:11.4.

Brewer was the 13th overall, men and women combined, two-mile placer.

St. Marys’ Jenny Brewer crosses the finish line to win the women’s division of the Two Mile Race. Brewer broke the women’s record in the win.

The previous women's two-mile record was 12:09, set in 2009 by Sami Harris of Charleston.

Brewer last ran in the Two Mile Race "probably about 10 years ago," she said. "But I just started getting back into running with cross country in my senior year of high school, and I'm now a junior at Alderson-Broaddus University" where she runs both track and cross country.

Saturday morning's cooler temperatures for this time of year "weren't too cool" though for Brewer. In fact, she said "it was pretty ideal for racing and I'm sure for the half marathon, it was perfect as well."

No one was ahead of Brewer at all during her race, "as far as I could see," she said.

"But this was just kind of a rest buster, because I haven't raced in a two-mile since high school," said Brewer. "So this was a lot faster than back then; I'm happy with that.

"I've had a great summer of training and I'm getting ready to go back to school tomorrow. So this was just a nice little finish-up at home."

Saturday's race was only Brewer's second of the summer, the previous was a 10K. "But I don't race a lot in the summertime," she said, "because at A-B, we have such a long season all year round."
