Rock group Kansas set to headline homecoming

PARKERSBURG — The legendary rock and roll band Kansas will headline the 2011 Parkersburg Homecoming, officials announced on Thursday. The Parkersburg Homecoming is the same weekend as the News and Sentinel Half Marathon.

“We are real excited,” said Homecoming board member Chuck Lipps said. “I feel we have a strong entertainment lineup.”

Homecoming representatives held a press conference Thursday at the Judge Black Annex to unveil the 2011 Homecoming lineup. Homecoming will be Aug. 19-21.

Lipps said organizers have been trying to land the group for two or three years and this year S&P Harley in Williamstown stepped in to help. Kansas will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.

During the ‘70s and ‘80s Kansas amassed a string of gold and platinum albums and sold-out tours. The group’s biggest hits are two of the most easily recognized songs of the classic rock genre, “Carry on Wayward Son” and the ballad “Dust in the Wind.”

In addition to Kansas, Lipps said Homecoming will also feature rising country star Colt Ford on Friday at 8:30 p.m.; Beatlemania Magic, a Beatles tribute band, on Saturday at 8:30 p.m., and the always-popular Johnny Staats Bluegrass Festival at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Billy the Kid and Regulators will be the opening act for Kansas.

This year’s Homecoming will include the standard events, pageants including the pretty baby contests, a carnival, a car show and the annual fireworks show.

“We will put at least as much money into as last year if not more,” Homecoming President Randall Roberts said of the fireworks.

This year’s Pioneer Antique Auto Club car show will be held on Market Street to keep crowds downtown.

Roberts said the schedule is 95 percent complete.

“We have a lot of good events going on,” he said. “It looks good. It sounds good.”
