Time To Get Moving
January 9, 2013 - Nathan Colyer
January and new year resolutions go hand-in-hand. The most popular resolutions always seem to be health- and fitness-related. My twitter and facebook feeds are flooded right now with friends vowing to eat healthier, lose weight, or get in shape now that it's 2013. Some are even promising to accomplish all three of these goals by “bikini season.” While I think these are great resolutions and I applaud them in their efforts, in my experience most people lose sight of their new year resolutions by mid-February. The gym at school is always overcrowded during the first few weeks of spring semester, only to be nearly empty again just a few weeks later.
I don't necessarily think that we are failing at reaching our goals for the new year out of laziness or lack of drive. Rather, I think we need to start reevaluating the resolutions that we make. I know that I personally always stay more motivated when I have a very specific aim to work towards, and an outline of the steps needed to get me there. Staying focused on one very specific fitness goal, instead of just simply saying that you want to “get in shape,” may be the key to actually sticking to your resolutions this year.
What better goal to have than to run this year's Half Marathon? Whether you're a seasoned runner or just a beginner, aiming to participate in the 2013 News and Sentinel Half Marathon just may be the motivation you need to keep working out this year. With just about 7 ½ months to race day, you have plenty of time to build yourself up to running the 13.1 mile course. Set small, monthly goals for yourself to work up to that distance and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Convinced? Register online today and get out there! I look forward to seeing you on race day.
