Olympics should provide inspiration to do your best

July 27, 2012 - Art Smith
For the next two weeks the world is going to be a spectator to some of the best “amateur” athletic competitions it ever has seen. The London Olympics are sure to be a grand spectacle as the countries of the world put forth their best athletes in an effort to bring home the gold, and the bragging rights that go with it.

For most of us, competing at that level is not an option. We weren’t born with the genes or the determination to spend years training for that one moment, that one swim, ride, jump or run that proves to the world we are the best there is.

For the rest of us there are simpler competitions, and closer ones that can help us prove we are the best in the region, in our age group or on our block. That’s right, I’m talking about The News and Sentinel Half Marathon, Two Mile Race, Junior Races and Tiny Tot Trot.

With hundreds already signed up, both the half marathon and the two mile race are set to provide the great experience that area residents have grown to expect. There are 604 people registered for the half marathon and 198 registered for the two mile. If history is an indicator, we will end up with around 1,050 in the half marathon and about 800 in the two mile. That’s nearly 2,000 people running, walking and rolling across the streets of Parkersburg at the same time.

Londoners hope people will leave their games with a good impression of their city. After being involved with The News and Sentinel Races for the last decade I know people will leave with a great impression of Parkersburg. The 1,000 people that help with the race will make sure of it. They will serve pasta, direct traffic, provide medical assistance, give cold drinks and cheer the athletes striving to do their best.

Citius, Altius, Fortius, the Olympic motto that encourages athletes to go faster, higher, stronger, applies in London, but it also applies to any athletic competition, including the one that takes over the downtown streets of Parkersburg for a few hours the third Saturday of every August.

Go fast, everyone; go fast.
