How quickly we forget

As the big race is approaching the committee has been busier than ever. I finally had a few minutes to run with Tom Joyce for the first time in what seemed like forever. It was nice to catch up with Tom. I have been keeping up with Tom's blog as well. On our run, we discussed the pressure he is feeling and his worries. Will he finish? How long will it take? Will his body hold up?  I know these are real concerns. I also know the pressure the Parkersburg Half Marathon brings with it especially for local runners.  I have not participated in the Parkersburg Half Marathon in a while simply because as the 2 mile director I can not spare the time Saturday morning. My place is at the finish line. But I remember running the Parkersburg Half many times. I remember the cheering voices helping me record a great finish on Market St. and I remember the throng of locals that help me record for all time the miserable finishes that still leave a mark in my psyche. It is tough to race/run in your home town. Tom is no different than me; he is only a newer runner.  I know veteran runners can tell you it will be okay. You are doing great but I know often those words don't sink very far. I am here to tell you I for one mean it when I say you are doing a great job. I believe other runners, like Chip Allman, half race director, also means it when he gives you a shout. I love to run and it excites me to see others grasp the sport for a 2 mile race or a half marathon. You are all winners because you will finished what you start. You will run and/or walk a 2 mile or half marathon while many people are still in bed or sitting on the couch wishing they could do what you just did. If you are a veteran runner, talk it up. Others may benefit from a simple good job or a five minute conversation during a training run. Get to know someone new. I can tell you that getting to know Tom Joyce has been very inspiring to me. He is really very funny and he has a million stories. I love them. If you are a new runner or maybe a first time half marathoner (or 2 miler), get ready because veteran runners like myself and Chip Allman will be at the finish line waiting for you and when we say good job, WE MEAN IT. See you next Saturday.
